Emergency Equipment:

An adequate spine board is not available on site. If one is required, stabilization will be maintained until EMS arrive.

An AED will always be with the ATC. AED’s are also located: High School- In the copy room of the front office in the far northwest cabinet. Junior High- In the nurse’s office just adjacent to the front desk. Elementary School- Behind the front desk in the east cabinet. Outdoor Events- with the AT or in the Rhino Cart left side. In addition, all coaches will be certified in CPR.

No commercial splints are available onsite for severe fractures. The ATC or doctor will determine the best approach for stabilizing.

Equipment removal tools for face masks, helmets, and shoulder pads are in the Rhino Cart, or with the AT.

Chain of Command:

The ATC will be on campus for every home varsity game. They will be the first one notified of an emergency and be responsible for delegating roles and making decisions as the emergency unfolds. If a team physician is present (typically only at home football games), they will assume command.

1. ATC should be notified immediately that a possible emergency has occurred. If no other dangers are present, the victim should not be moved without the ATC assessing the situation. They will then:

a. Provide or take over immediate care of the victim

b. Make decision to activate EMS or not

i. Assign someone to call 911. Caller provides dispatch with:

1. Your name

2. Name, age, sex, and number of injured

3. Nature of injury/illness

4. Care being given

5. Address of facility (pg 1)

6. Directions to enter facility (pg 3-4)

7. Do not hang up until EMS arrives and dispatch hangs up first

*If you need help supplying dispatch with any of this information ask the ATC

c. Delegate retrieval of emergency equipment. A list of common items needed are found on page 2.

d. Delegate someone to place people at key points to direct EMS to the victim (pg 3 outlines these key points).

Possible Types of Emergencies & Responses

1. Cardiac Distress/Arrest

a. Activate EMS, initiate CRP/AED as needed, monitor vitals, monitor/treat for shock. All coaches should be certified in CPR and can initiate treatment as they contact the ATC.

a. All outdoor events will be suspended if the lighting is within 6 miles (monitor via app, or flash to bang counting 30 seconds or less). Everyone at event should seek shelter in the bunker, the Roost, or vehicles. Play cannot resume until 30 minutes after the last lightning strike.

b. Lightning may be monitored by ATC, coaches, school staff, or officials. ATC will have final decision as to when to suspend practices and games.

c. Struck by lightning
