About ALA Technical Theatre Program

Technical Theater invites students to dive into the thrilling world behind the scenes, where creativity meets technical expertise. From introductory to advanced levels, students will master the fundamentals of lighting, audio, projection, and stage management. They will also discover how these elements come together to shape unforgettable performances, making this class an engaging and dynamic learning experience. Students will develop new skills in a hands-on environment and gain real-world experience by supporting exciting after school events like the all-school musical, drama plays, MDT musicals, dance shows, choir concerts, and more. Whether you’re curious about what happens backstage or passionate about creating magic for the audience, this class will equip you with the leadership, knowledge, and problem-solving skills to succeed.

Course Offerings

Theatre Tech 1

This class will teach students the basic skills for running lights and sound for drama productions, assemblies, and auditorium rentals. This class may require after school and out of school time during rehearsals and performances. (Grades 9-12)


Theatre Tech II

This class will teach students the basic skills for running lights and sound for drama productions, assemblies, and auditorium rentals. This class may require after school and out of school time during rehearsals and performances. (Grades 9-12)

 

Theatre Tech III

This is an advanced Stage Tech class that will be responsible for running lights, sound, and running crew for all drama productions, assemblies, and auditorium rentals. This class requires extensive after school and out of school time during rehearsals and performances. (Grades 10-12)

 

Stagecraft

Stagecraft introduces students to a practical approach to technical and production aspects. Students learn the skills needed to construct scenery, hang and focus lighting instruments, and implement a sound system. The student becomes proficient in analyzing set design, color, lighting, costuming, and stage make-up. Practical experience is gained in the construction of sets and stage materials. After school hours may be required.

Meet The Director

Joseph Governale

Technical Director

Joseph Governale is a dedicated and accomplished technical theatre professional, teaching Technical Theatre Levels 1-3 and serving as the Technical Director for all performing arts performances. With a passion for sharing the craft, Joseph instills the values of leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving in his students, emphasizing how these skills extend to every walk of life.  Outside the classroom, Joseph is an experienced freelance lighting and projection designer who has collaborated with theaters across the country. His portfolio includes work with esteemed organizations such as Hale Center Theater in Orem, Honolulu Theatre for Youth, Orlando Shakespeare Festival, and The Hawaii Theatre. He has also served in pivotal roles like Production Manager and Resident Lighting Designer, where he successfully streamlined production workflows, mentored creative teams, and ensured the seamless integration of technical elements for award-winning performances.  Joseph holds an MFA in Theatre Design from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa and a BA in Media Studies from the University of Southern Maine. He combines his extensive experience and enthusiasm for the arts to inspire the next generation of theatre professionals.
